Northern Thailand and Chiang Mai locality
Chiang Mai is a popular city for cyclists and acts as a good base for riding in the north. There is a thriving road cyclist scene with plenty of bike shops for your road/gravel/mtb needs, great street food and the old city to explore.
For road cyclists there are plenty of challenging rides most have quite a substantial elevation gain around Thailand’s highest mountain Doi Inthanon and at Soi Suthep and even routes up to Chiang Rai. There are plenty of local and international tour companies that run multi day tours of Northern Thailand and into bordering Laos.
The Doi Suthep mountain biking trails have hosted an international enduro race and has variety of DH/Enduro trails and more relaxed touring trails. In town you find tour operators running guided tours suited to different skill levels riding through villages with scenic views over Chiang Mai city. MTB shuttles run in the form of a red truck taxi at Chiang Mai zoo just west of town. There is also more XC/trails at Grand Canyon - Hang Dong nearby.
Seasoned bikepackers have the possibility of the same epic scenery as many motorcyclists take on the 650km Mae Hong Son Loop reaching over 2000m above sea level. There is also the more manageable 390km Lanna Kingdom Loop getting up to over 1700m.
Chiang Mai airport is central to town and only a short drive to the old city. If you are travelling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai there is also an overnight train but be sure to book well in advance.
