Activities and Local information

Hobart and South Tasmania locality

Tasmania’s capital Hobart has a strong cycling scene with loads of MTB trails to choose from, some of the most popular being the Mt Wellington trails west of the city leading back to town, Meehan to the east and the (free access) Glenorchy Bike Park. There are tour operators and shuttles based in town as well as plenty of bike shops and bike rentals. Hobart is not just for mountain bikers, there are plenty of road cycling loops located around greater Hobart, some with very challenging climbs. Hobart has plenty of things to see and do off the bike too, from brewery and winery tours, markets to the very unique privately owned museum MONA.

Maydena Bike Park is a unique addition to Australia’s mountain biking with over 80km of trails and over 800meters of descending. Nicknamed the ‘Whistler of Oz’ and set in Tasmania’s scenic Mt. Field National Park of the Derwent valley, the park has spectacular views at it’s the peak sitting over 1000 meters above sea level. The bike park has trails suited to all levels (even pro lines) as well as bike hire, instructors, bike shop and repair, café/restaurant at the base. There are also bike and hiking trails outside of the park to explore the surrounding area.

For skiiing and snowboarding it is 73km or just over an hours drive from Hobart or 12km from Maydena to Mount Field visitor center to gain access to the community run Mount Mawson ski field. Facilities there are limited and there are no rental options, be sure to check for conditions and plan for snow chains.

For adventure riders and bikepackers there is the 480km Tasmanian trail located in Dover that leads up to Devonport in the north. Maria Island National Park is a great option too, and is accessed by ferry from Triabunna, north east of Hobart. This world heritage listed island is car-free and has plenty of bike trails to explore for a day trip, organised tour or there is camping or basic accommodation on the island, however you have to bring all your own supplies. There is bike rental available or you can bring your own on the ferry.Bruny Island is also a popular cycling destination accessible from Kettering 32km from Hobart.

Hobart Airport is a 25 minute drive from the city, there are plenty of vehicle rental choices including RVs for longer road trips. Maydena is 1.25 hour drive west from Hobart. Triabunna is just over an hour drive and 85km from Hobart. Dover is just over an hour drive or 79km from Hobart.
